TOUGH END TO A GREAT YEAR!

AUGUST 27th

The Stormin’ Performance Motorsports team with driver Stormin’ Norman Mayhew rode a wave of momentum into this past Sunday’s Kawartha Speedway Summer Sizzler 200 lap Late Model race. The team was very positive after an extremely strong 6th place finish out of a 23 car pack the previous week in the ultra-competitive top class at Kawartha. The Summer Sizzler is the marquis event of the season and attracts competitors from across Ontario and the American northeast.

Thirty cars took the green flag for the 3-segment race, with the eagle.ca team rolling off 22nd on the grid. While running in the 16th position, the skies opened up and offered a brief but heavy shower on lap 50. After some preparation the track was ready to go and racing resumed. The 60 team was forced to pit under caution on lap 65 due to an overheating engine. The team returned to the track and managed to climb back to the 20th position before the checkers fell over the first of three segments.

During the break, crew chief Colin MacKenzie ordered a fuel top up and 4 new American Racer tires, as well as some minor chassis adjustments to fine tune the eagle.ca Dodge Intrepid R/T. The team returned to the competition in the second segment to find that the entire field would be inverted and that they would roll off 10th.

The beginning of the second segment looked promising as Norm battled side-by-side with Colborne, On driver Linc Brown in the PartSource Charger for the 10th position for 8 laps. Unfortunately after the 20th lap, an ignition box failure sent the car towards the back of the field. Finally on lap 32 the field was slowed and the team was able to make repairs. The team sent the car back on track to try and gain as many spots as possible.

Unfortunately, the day already plagued with problems, came to a very abrupt hault after deliberate contact from Joey Laquerre, of East Montpellier, Vermont, sent the 60 car very hard into the turn 1 wall. The car returned to the pits on the tow truck to assess the damage and it was determined that the car could not be fixed and would be forced to retire for the day.

The team returned to its Cobourg shop Sunday night to further review the damage, and it was determined that the front frame of the car would have to be replaced. Due to the financial situation, the team will unfortunately end their season two races early, with repairs estimated at several thousand dollars. The Stormin’ Performance team was down, but not out, as it considered the season a success, as it was running 8th overall in the season point standings out of the 41 drivers, as well as hopefully wrapping up the “Rookie of the year” title for their division.

The team is now actively seeking sponsorship for the 2007 season. During the off season, Norm is scheduled to attend the Finish Line Racing School in Florida, as well as sporting a brand new Dodge Charger SRT-8 from Jeff Hanley Racecars.

The team would like to thank eagle.ca for being the title sponsor for the ’06 season as well as: The Amara Company, McKeen Chrysler Dodge Jeep, Lakeland Multi-Trade, Casey’s Bar and Grill, APX Racewear, Spring St. Chiropractic, Sunoco Tribospec Oil, CarQuest Cobourg, Mr. Transmission Peterborough, Miwel, Re/Max Lakeshore Realty, Northumberland County Moving Company, Murray Thomson, Mayhew Graphics, MacKenzie Enterprises, Big Sisters/Big Brothers and Jerry, Carolyn, Rachel and Jordan Birney.
